5 Rules for Healthy Habits
Healthy habits can be developed like any other habits. You need to do them often enough so that they become a part of your daily lifestyle but not too much so that you are overloaded. Here are some tips in establishing healthy habits.
- Start by writing your habit down as a daily goal. This might require a paper pad an a pen, or just a sticky on you fridge. For example your habit can be "eat 3 servings of veggies today" or "walk 30 minutes daily".
- Stick to your habit for at least 4 days in a row. Studies have shown that when you do something four days in a row, you begin to develop a more consistent pattern.
- Tell a friend about your goal/habit. This way you are accountable to someone. Even if you can cheat yourself, it will be harder to cheat a friend.
- Baby steps. Start with 1 habit and stick to it. Once it has become a normal pattern for you, then you will feel like you have accomplished something and will feel more confident in achieving other goals/habits.
- Breathe. Be patient. If you exercise your practice, its bound to happen.
